The 1996 Alliance & Leicester Personal Finance

Formula 2000 Championship

Round 5 - Silverstone - 22nd June 1996

FANTASTIC FIVE

Graham Fennymore continues to dominate the Alliance & Leicester Personal Finance Formula 2000 Championship with his fifth consecutive pole position and race win. Fennymore now heads the Championship table with 78 points, 36 ahead of new second placed man James Beales. James graduated to F2000 this season from F.First and has shown consistent form to take him to the second best slot. In qualifying, the 19 year old looked very impressive and fell short of pole by a mere 0.33 seconds. Formula Vauxhall Junior graduate Robin Liddell fell in just behind Beales for third with Martin Wallbank rounding off the two front rows. James Hills and Elliot Lewis completed the top six, all within 0.77 seconds - very close.

At the lights Beales pushed Fennymore for the first corner and held tight through to the exit of the final, but slid wide giving Fennymore just enough to stretch ahead. That was all he needed.

Two laps later Lewis had charged his way into fourth but hit engine problems and returned to the pit lane in the hope of finding a solution. Bad luck seemed to turn to good as the race was stopped, giving Elliot more time to sort the problem before the restart.

James Hills had also had engine problems and went by blowing smoke on two laps, into the fourth and the back of the car was on fire. A spin stranded the young Hills in the middle of the Club straight and the restart was ordered.

Back to Elliot; some 20 minutes were on Elliots side as the team struggled to find an answer...they thought they had. Elliot was forced to start the second part of the race from the pit lane. A fantastic charge in the opening lap saw him displace car after car until he went by six places ahead - on lap one!

The spectacle however was short lived as the gremlins returned and Elliot retired for the last time to the pits.

Back in the race it was all for Fennymore now and Martin Wallbank, starting from fourth had made it by Liddell and Beales for second.

All in all it was a good result for the graduates who followed the 'beaming' Fennymore home, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
