Graham Fennymore's relentless pursuit of the Championship title continued unabated at Castle Combe with his sixth consecutive pole position and race win. After the race Graham said, "It's getting harder all the time, Martin (Wallbank) pushed hard at Silverstone and today even harder still. He was a real threat to me right up until he came off. I'm enjoying the challenge".
Wallbank was third on the grid behind Robin Liddell, the Scott proving that his improved form at Silverstone was here to stay. Wallbank however was quickest off the line and passed Liddell before the first corner and immediately looked to pressure Fennymore. Although right on his tail all the way from lap two, Wallbank was unable to make for a gap until lap eight when he forced his way inside at the tight Quarry, but Fennymore miraculously held his line and came through to Farm Straight still ahead. That's the way it stayed as the next approach to Tower saw Wallbank get it all wrong for a retirement into the tyre wall. The young privateer damaging his car almost beyond repair and leaving a question mark over his return to the Championship.
As the pack flowed from Wallbanks disaster onto the last corner of lap eight, Liddell lost his exhaust at the apex and immediately started to slow. This however was academic, as the black flag came out for his now deemed to be 'dangerous' car. Robin deserved better on the day, but thats' motor racing, from second to retirement in an instant.
That left the top six order as follows: Fennymore, now with an unassailable lead from Beales, Lewis and Cunnington, just holding off the '94 Champion Mike Doble for fifth.
Elliot Lewis had done well to qualify sixth in a qualifying session which started dry and ended wet. He followed that performance with a strong drive to third at the flag in the race and now moves up from fourth in the Championship points table, just ten points short of Mike Doble. On his current form, Elliot should move up to third within the next two races and could start to challenge James Beales for second.
