The domination of the Alliance & Leicester Personal Finance Formula 2000 Championship continued for the Tecton Racing driver Graham Fennymore, at Snetterton. His 7th consecutive pole position and race win puts Graham firmly in the record books, and in an almost unbeatable position for the 1996 Championship title. Even so, the pressure is mounting with the charge of of the graduates brigade, from Martin Wallbank, James Beales and Robin Liddell.
Unfortunate Martin Wallbank, who gave Fennymore a real challenge in rounds 5 and 6, broke his hand whilst preparing his car and could not compete. Now, the challenge came from young James Beales.
Beales qualified second on the grid, ahead of the quick Scott Robin Liddell and Mike Doble. Fennymore experienced his first bad start of the season, whilst a super quick start came from Peter Alexander. Starting from 5th, Alexander was in the lead at the second corner, with Fennymore having dropped to 3rd behind Beales. On the approach to Russell for the first time however, Alexander's lead was lost through a four wheel lock up, which saw him go straight on and into the gravel. He was lucky to rejoin further down the field, but out of contention for a podium finish. This incident also made room for Fennymore to dive past Beales. It was back to business as usual for the Championship leader. Beales followed Fennymore as the pair took a distance from the pack by lap 6, and was hoping for a rare mistake from Fennymore. Despite a lock up, again at Russell, Fennymore held on to his lead, with Beales in second
The battle for third place showed the close, exciting racing of Formula 2000. Lewis, Liddell, Doble and Brain changed position as often as laps, nearly colliding when overtaking. As the chequered flag fell, Liddell took the third position before Lewis, Brain and Doble. Alexander eventually got a 10 second penalty for jumpstarting. The crowd enjoyed not only the hot sunny weather, but also a fantastic race.
Graham Fennymore's lead over second placed Beales is now an astonishing 44 points. Doble trails in third, but Elliot Lewis is catching up rapidly. With 4 more rounds to go, a close battle for second, third and fourth continues.
