Career

Motor sport was very much in the blood for Alf as he followed his father, Bill, into Midget Grand Prix racing in 1974. Alf was not following for long though and soon became one of the most successful and repected drivers the class has seen. His Championship wins were all achieved driving the 1350cc BMC powered Arrow cars designed by his father and include a World title, the European, and British titles. Having very little left to prove, Alf retired from Midget racing in 1985 after winning his fourth National Championship Series.

Staying with stadium racing, Alf moved into National Hot Rods firstly with a Ford motivated Mazda 323 and later with a similarly powered Toyota Starlet. Amongst many domestic race wins, Alf won the 1987 'Best in Britain' and Southern Championship whilst finishing second in the National Championship Series.

Alf made the inevitable move onto the circuits in 1989. Competing in Thundersaloons, and again racing a Ford Powered Starlet which at the time appeared somewhat unconventional for circuit racing, the results started to build up whilst the lap records fell. Third place overall in 1990 was followed by second in 1991 and victory in 1992.

In 1994, Alf was one of the pioneers of Eurocar in his V6 Mondeo. He won the first ever Eurocar Championship round and took two more duirng the season finishing third overall in the Championship just five points behind Kevin Clarke in the Intersport car.

In 1995 Alf continued his Eurocar career finishing 12th overall in the Championship in his Dagenham Motors V6 Mondeo.

For 1996 Alf joins Kevin Clarke in the Kennametal Hertel UK / Intersport Eurocar team to drive their V6 Mondeo.
