Basildon Retro 97

Saturday 5th July 1997

In 1922 Basildon played host to a hill climb event which attracted a world record entry of over 1000. Among them were the great motor sport personalities of that era, Raymond Mays. Parry Thomas. Woolf Barnato and Archie Frazer Nash amongst others.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary or this important moment in motor sport history and to raise money for Basildon's unique glass and steel bell tower St Martin's Parish Church are running Retro 97.

With the enthusiastic co-operation of Basildon District Council and Essex Police we are closing a 3.4 mile circuit of public roads on Saturday 05 July 1997 from 14:00hrs to 15:30hrs.

Among the star drivers taking part are Stirling Moss, Tony Brooks, Chris Amon, Will Hoy and Tiff Needell. A list of the cars taking part and other information are available on the web at aaa although others are still to be added. We shall run high speed demonstration runs by the cars, some in groups and some singly.

The paddock and base for Retro 97 are in Gloucester park, a beautiful natural park in the centre of the town. Around the paddock will be static displays by classic car clubs and manufacturers. Basildon District Council are hosting a day of leisure activities throughout the park in support of Retro 97.

Retro 97 has the active support of the British Racing Drivers Club and many members are taking part in one way or another.
